The Oregon State Police arrested a Douglas County motorist for multiple crimes after she crashed into another vehicle on Interstate 5 in northern Josephine County while impaired last night. OSP reports troopers and emergency personnel responded to the two-vehicle wreck in the northbound lanes of I-5 near milepost 78 on Thursday at about 9 p.m.. Troopers said an investigation determined that a 38-year-old Winston woman was driving a Ford Fusion when she rear-ended a Toyota Prius driven by a 74-year-old Bandon woman who had a 76-year-old female passenger aboard. The passenger was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Medical Center with chest pains. According to OSP, the Winston woman showed signs of impairment at the scene. She refused to participate in field sobriety tests and was taken to the Josephine County Jail where she provided a breath sample that was more than twice the legal driving limit. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed to Grants Pass. The female suspect was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving, two counts of Reckless Endangering and Criminal Mischief. She was being held without bail.

 

Grants Pass Police arrested a woman on an outstanding felony warrant and found her to be in possession of a stolen scooter yesterday. The Police Department reports officers were searching for the 27-year-old female subject before they found her at a home in the 1,000-block of East Park Street on Thursday shortly after 2 p.m.. Police said the woman was wanted on a Grants Pass felony warrant for failing to appear in court for Identity Theft. They said she was well known to them from previous law enforcement contacts and was staying with her grandmother. She ran out the back door, but was placed into custody at a nearby parking lot. The woman advised officers that there was a man was inside the residence with a stolen scooter. He was contacted and denied stealing the scooter, stating that he bought it from another man for $50. The scooter was seized for safekeeping as it is believed to be stolen. The suspect was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the warrant as well as for suspicion of 2nd-Degree Theft. Her bail was set at $30,000.

 

Firefighters extinguished a grass fire that had escaped from a burn barrel near the City of Rogue River yesterday. On Thursday at 2:53 p.m., Jackson County Fire District #1 responded to the blaze in the 900-block of Foots Creek Road. Arriving units found a fire that was spreading and spotting up a hill. Due to the rate of spread, a second alarm was requested to bring additional resources including Grants Pass Fire & Rescue, Rural Metro Fire Department, Evans Valley Fire District and the Oregon Department of Forestry. Jackson County Fire District Chief Mike Hammond said crews were able to stop the fire at about two acres. He said an investigation determined that a resident was burning debris in a barrel when flames escaped, spread quickly across the ground and sent embers aloft, which resulted in spot fires on the nearby hillside. Hammond reminded residents that the 2024 fire season starts on Saturday and all outdoor debris burning will be prohibited.

 

Grants Pass Police cited a motorist for causing a crash on Rogue River Highway yesterday. According to the Police Department, officers and emergency crews responded to the two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 99 and Parkdale Drive on Thursday around 2:35 p.m.. Police said a woman was driving a green Jeep south on the highway when she made a left turn onto Parkdale in front of a northbound blue Pontiac sedan driven by a man. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt in the crash. The Pontiac had to be towed from the scene due to damage sustained in the crash. Following an investigation, the female motorist was cited for Dangerous Left Turn and No Insurance. She left the Jeep in the Bottle Drop Center parking lot and was warned not drive it until she had obtained insurance.

 

The Oregon State Police arrested a motorist for extreme speeding on Interstate 5 in the Grants Pass area yesterday. According to OSP, troopers caught up to and pulled over a Dodge Journey driven by a 25-year-old man on the freeway at 1:21 p.m. Thursday. Troopers said they stopped the motorist after they observed him traveling at 107 miles per hour in a 65 mile-per-hour speed zone. He was also found to be driving without a license or insurance. The suspect was cited to appear in court for the traffic violations and his vehicle was impounded.

 

The Josephine County Sheriff's Office jailed a man for numerous crimes this week following a violent incident near Rogue Community College. The Sheriff's Office reports deputies arrested a 30-year-old male subject for the incident in the area of Campus View and Demaray drives on Wednesday morning. They were assisted by the Oregon State Police. Deputies said an investigation determined that the suspect went to a house and asked for a ride. After being turned down, he left on foot and stole the victim's weedeater. The victim located the suspect walking on Demaray and confronted him with a baton. The suspect raised a metal water bottle and told the victim they could fight or he could take him to where the weedeater was. The two men left together in a car when the suspect began punching the victim and forced him to stop in the opposite travel lane. The suspect then grabbed the victim's baton and struck him several times in the head, causing significant injuries. A man stopped to render aid to the victim as the suspect attempted to steal the victim's car. The suspect used the baton to strike the man in the head several times before the man managed to get the baton and strike the suspect as deputies arrived on scene. Deputies identified the suspect as 30-year-old Brandon William Measel who is a convicted felon wanted on a Josephine County warrant for Assault, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Domestic Strangulation. He was placed into custody and taken to Three Rivers Medical Center for treatment. The two other men refused treatment. After being medically cleared at the hospital, Measel was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the warrant plus new charges of 2nd-Degree Assault, Robbery, Menacing, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Mischief and Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon. He was being held without bail.

 

Grants Pass Police jailed a man and his wife for felony drug trafficking after performing a welfare check on the east side of the city this week. The Police Department reports officers responded to a welfare check request in the 2200-block of NE Industry Drive early Wednesday morning. Police said a citizen called 9-1-1 to report a man and woman slumped over in a green Ford station wagon. Officers arrived on scene and observed a tackle box in the man's lap. The 41-year-old man and 40-year-old woman identified themselves before handing over the tackle box which contained a white powdery substance that was later confirmed to be fentanyl. The male suspect was handcuffed after a brief scuffle with police. He suffered a medical episode and was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Medical Center. The female suspect admitted the car and narcotics belonged to them. A consent search of the vehicle uncovered a green container containing more fentanyl plus a large quantity of small blue baggies and two scales. According to the report, a total of 60 grams of fentanyl and packaging materials were seized as evidence. They were sent to the Oregon State Police crime lab for additional testing. Both the husband and wife were lodged at the Josephine County Jail for Felony Manufacture, Possession and Delivery of a Schedule 2 Controlled Substance. Both were being held without bail.

 

Grants Pass Police apprehended a man wanted on a statewide felony warrant at a local watering hole this week. The Police Department reports officers arrested a 44-year-old male subject at the Lucky Duck on NW 6th Street on Wednesday night. Police said they received an anonymous tip that the man was playing a poker machine inside the adult business. He was wanted on an Oregon State warrant for Parole Violation stemming from a conviction for Possession of Dangerous Drugs. The suspect was known to have a violent criminal history and flagged to possibly be in possession of a firearm. After he was contacted inside the bar and advised he was under arrest, he attempted to flee on foot but officers were blocking each exit door. He failed to follow lawful commands and had to be subdued with a Taser. The suspect was placed into custody and refused a medical evaluation. He was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the warrant plus a new charge of Escape. He was being held on a no-bail detainer.

 

Grants Pass Police arrested a man on two local felony warrants while investigating an illegal campsite near the Skate Park this week. According to the Police Department, officers were alerted to a campsite set up in the area of SE Riverside Avenue and 12th Street on Wednesday afternoon. There was trash strewn all over the area. Police said they attempted to contact a 38-year-old male subject for Offensive Littering when he ran away to Home Depot and entered the store. Officers tracked him down and found him hiding in the bushes in front of Fire Mountain Gems. That's when they learned why he was running. The man was wanted on a Josephine County felony warrant for Parole Violation stemming from convictions for Flight to Avoid Prosecution and Felony Attempt to Elude Police. He was also wanted on a Grants Pass felony warrant for Probation Violation related to arrests for 1st-Degree Theft and Larceny. The suspect was placed into custody and lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the outstanding warrants. He was being held on a no-bail detainer.
