Board Scheduled to Hold Three Public Hearings Pertaining to FY 2025 Budget
The Josephine County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to hold three public hearings pertaining to the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget during its weekly business session tomorrow morning. The budget hearings for Josephine County, the Law Enforcement Service District and the 4-H Extension Service District will follow a presentation by the BLM on the Pipe Fork property near Williams and a public hearing on an ordinance that would amend the Rural Land Development Code for accessory dwelling units. Out of the three budget hearings, the most controversial is the 4-H Extension Service District which two of the Commissioners have vowed to defund due to their perception that it has become too liberal. If the Board does not follow the recommendation of the Budget Committee to fund the district, Josephine will become the only county in the state not to receive OSU Extension services. The Board was scheduled to approve the $2.32 million sale of the Pipe Fork property last week, but the Commissioners postponed their decision to be sure the BLM would not be logging the property and to ensure public access to the parcel. Wednesday's public meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the Anne G. Basker Auditorium.

ODOT Cautions Motorists that Redwood Highway Chip Seal Project Continues
The Oregon Department of Transportation is cautioning motorists that Redwood Highway chip seal work continues between O'Brien and the California border. Last week, the contractor placed rock along the chip seal area in the southern Illinois Valley. This week, the contractor will smooth out any bumpy areas, add permanent striping and reflectors, and perform other work. With concerns about striping adhering to the fresh chip seal with warm weather, striping work is tentatively planned for night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.. Other work will take place during daytime hours. The striping work will likely begin around milepost 36 in the O'Brien area and continue south to the border while reflectors will be installed in the opposite direction. ODOT officials said drivers can expect lane closures through the work zone and delays up to 20 minutes. Traffic control will be provided by flaggers -- including an automated system -- and pilot cars. Drivers should watch for loose rock along the work zone and allow extra space between vehicles. Installation of reflectors could continue for a couple of weeks, and it will include the entire area from Cave Junction to the California border. Construction schedules are subject to change without notice.
