Josephine County Commissioners to Host Public Meeting on Wildfire Hazard Map
The Josephine County Board of Commissioners is inviting residents to a public meeting regarding the Oregon Wildfire Hazard Map. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 26th, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Anne G. Basker Auditorium, located at 600 NW 6th Street in Grants Pass. During the meeting, the Board of Commissioners and leaders from more than a dozen other Oregon counties will meet virtually with representatives from Oregon State University and the Oregon Department of Forestry. While members of the public will not be able to speak at the meeting, residents are encouraged to provide their questions or comments in writing to the Commission prior to the meeting. The draft Wildfire Hazard Map went "live" for public review and comment on July 18th. The official draft map can be seen at "hazardmap.forestry.oregonstate.edu." Senate Bill 80 states that "county commissioners, upon request by the county commissioners, must have one additional opportunity, arranged and scheduled by the Association of Oregon Counties, with either in-person attendance or a hybrid of in-person and remote attendance, to discuss concerns about the map and potential changes to the map."

GP 911 Communications Center Fielded 1,428 Emergency Calls Plus Hang-Ups
The Grants Pass 9-1-1 Communications Center fielded 1,428 emergency calls last week -- and at least 150 calls when people hung up before they could be coded for a response. As usual, the Grants Pass Police Department received the vast majority of the calls with 922 from August 8th-August 14th. American Medical Response received 325 calls while Grants Pass Fire & Rescue got 117. Rural Metro Fire Department received 62 emergency calls during the seven-day period, followed by the Illinois Valley Fire District with 35, Oregon Department of Forestry with 23, Williams Fire-Rescue with 4 and the Wolf Creek Rural Fire Protection District with 2. Dispatchers also received 580 internal calls and they made 649 outbound calls. If you accidentally call 9-1-1, please stay on the line and let dispatchers know. It's a common misconception that hanging up right away keeps them from wasting time on the call. But in reality, it means that they're researching prior contacts and calling you back to make sure you're safe. Depending on what was heard in the background, they may also be sending an officer to check on you.
